That Shade of Red

Runaa stepped out of the shower.

Wiping away the fog on the mirror, she took a good one minute admiring herself.

A smile played on her face as she stepped into the negligee. She felt pretty tonight. She fluttered her eyes as she put on a fresh coat of mascara and her favourite red lipstick. Goes with the dress she thought. Flipping her loose curls she winked at her reflection staring back at her.

I am definitely worth it she thought.

When she got out of the bathroom the chill in the room gave her goosebumps.

She found Aneesh by the window looking outside at the traffic hustling by. It’s strange how this city never sleeps. The skyline looked beautiful from the 23rd floor. She made her way to him and stood there barely touching him. He turned to look at her and pulled her closer. He inhaled sharply and let her scent register on his senses. She took a step back. Smiled at him suggestively and walked towards the bed, her walk ever so seductive.

He smiled to himself..”What would I be doing without her tonight?”

Runaa woke up and saw Aneesh’s hand resting on her stomach. She smiled and remembered last night. She turned slightly and looked at the time. It was half past 9. She got up suddenly and made a dash towards the washroom. She was so gonna be late! “Stupid Amazing Sex” she thought!!

When she got out of the bathroom she saw Aneesh at the breakfast table. He looked like he was straight out of those glossy magazines. “How does he manage to be so incredibly sexy”, she thought. Then last night played in her head and she thought, “That’s how!”

He looked up and caught her gawking at him. He smiled and snapped her out of her Runaa-Land.

He beckoned her and signalled towards the empty chair.

She was going to be late but somehow she could not find it in her heart to step out without breakfast with him. There was something about him she wasn’t able to say NO to.

Aneesh wasn’t in the mood to let her go so soon. Both of them could sense that.

Aneesh asked her, “What would Madame like to have today? French Toast, is it?”

Runaa couldn’t suppress her amusement at his thick fake French accent and laughed.

He waited for her to finish laughing and tried a German accent this time.

He got the same reaction this time as well.

He smiled too. They had a healthy breakfast and conversation.

It was 11:30 am when Runaa finally decided to go. She got up to find her bag when Aneesh suddenly asked her, “What do you think about marriage?”

Runaa stood perplexed and shocked…

“Yes. Marriage.”

“I don’t think about it.”, she said.

“Then think about it now. Think about a house. Think about me. Think about all the great times we have had. I know we have only been with each other a few times but I want to explore the rest of you..I want to explore the rest of us…”

Runaa was still unable to comprehend the gravity of his statement or the situation.

Runaa was transported into a time when she was a chirpy innocent school girl. She remembered the time she was Ruhinaa.

She remembered the day she became Runaa.

She used to be a coy schoolgirl. Good with studies.

One day she fell in love with a boy she shouldn’t have. He promised to love her every day.
He told her to wait for him at the end of the farmland. He will come to pick her up where they would run away from home and start a new life. He never came but someone else did.

She remembered the fateful night she was sold off at the brothel.

Why did she have to trust the boy from school? Why did she run away from her house? Why did she leave everything home?

Why was she the reason her family is dead?

Why was she leading this life?

Why couldn’t she have met Aneesh at the coffee shop across the street?

Why was Aneesh her client?

Why was Aneesh not the man she worked with in office?

Why was she his preferred choice of the night since the past 6 months he had been coming to this city?

Why couldn’t she wake up next to him every day?

He has asked me. Should I leave everything behind and start fresh?

Should I stop living the life I am leading right now?

Do I deserve my chance at happiness?

She was just about to say something to him when his phone rang. She picked it up from the table to hand the phone over to him when she saw who the caller was. She saw a happy picture of a woman kissing Aneesh. He snatched it and stashed it inside his pocket.

Runaa snapped out of her Ruhinaa trance when her phone began to ring this time. She turned her back on him and took her phone out.

She yelled back after listening to yelling from the other side, “Yeah I know I am late…I was stuck with something! I am done with the client. Payment is to be received in my Account only and half the sum in cash.”

Just before hanging up she shouted into the phone, “Also see if Bree is available next time for him. I don’t want to be with him from now on. Cancel all my future appointments with him!”

Runaa turns to look at a very sorry looking Aneesh and says, “At least I am honest to myself and my job. I sell my body and I don’t buy your lies. You cannot afford me.”

She lit a cigarette and walked out of the suite. Her harlot red lips curled into a smile and she laughed at herself for believing any man would want a marriage with her. Her laugh rang out clear as her hips swayed provocatively. She did not stop till she reached the car waiting for her downstairs. She reached the door and put out her cigarette under her heel. Once she was convinced of the attention she had commanded was all directed at her, she smiled and closed the door of the car as it sped away.

i like the way it is written. I like the attitude and the charm of lady, a small kid and a soft heart a girl can have at the same time.

Though the colour RED indicates love, but who would have thought the ‘Blues’ a colour ‘Red’ could give!
Beautifully written, loved the way ‘Runaa’ is portrayed- Dreamy, sassy and classy. <3
